Spring Cleaning: A Fresh Start for Home and Soul

Spring has a way of sparking a renewed sense of accomplishment, doesn’t it? As the warmer weather creeps in and the days get longer, it’s time to tackle the dreaded spring clean. While some may groan at the thought, for me, it’s a chance to feel alive and refreshed—a clean slate for the year ahead. Let’s face it, January often feels blah, but spring brings new energy and brightness to everything.

Here’s what’s on my spring cleaning to-do list this year:

1. Windows: A Clear View

Who actually enjoys cleaning windows? Not many. But the payoff? Priceless. There’s nothing quite like looking out and seeing the beauty of the world clearly. Once it’s done, I always say, “I’m so glad I did this.” Of course, the birds may think it’s an open invitation to join us inside, but hey, that’s nature for you!

2. Sills and Containers: What’s Hiding There?

You never know what’s lurking in those hidden nooks. Living in the country, I’ve discovered everything from bees to bird nests and critters with minds of their own. Some visitors are charming; others, not so much. But giving those spots a proper clean always brings a sense of order (and a little peace of mind).

3. Eaves: Call for Backup

This is definitely a tag-team effort in our house. While I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty, climbing the ladder isn’t my favourite task. Thankfully, my husband usually takes the lead here. Between squirrels scattering messes and regular buildup, there’s always something to tackle—but it’s worth it for a clean deck below.

4. Trimming Plants: New Growth, New Life

Pruning back plants is one of my favourite parts of spring. It’s all about giving new growth the space to thrive. My prized miniature rose bush—which I’ve somehow kept alive for 14 years—is a testament to this. Every year, I trim it back, and every year, it surprises me by growing stronger and more vibrant.

5. Garden Planning: A Balancing Act

Spring is the perfect time to rethink the garden layout. Whether it’s planting new bulbs or relocating last year’s overzealous growers, there’s always room for improvement. My husband and I have differing visions here—he prefers neat and tidy, while I love whimsical and overgrown. We usually compromise (or I win for a season or two).

6. Clearing the Clutter: Farewell, Blackberry Bush

This year, I’m finally saying goodbye to the wild blackberry bush. It’s a prickly nuisance that produces maybe seven berries a season. Clearing it out will make room for something new and exciting.

7. Refreshing Stains: A Labor of Love

Staining wood isn’t my favourite chore, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Years ago, my husband crafted benches from wood we found at my parents’ home. The sentimental value makes maintaining them a joy, even if the smell of stain lingers longer than I’d like. After seven years, those benches remain cherished pieces by our firepit.

8. A Bold New Project: Front Door Makeover

This might be the year for a bold new front door colour. I’m thinking something bright and inviting, but convincing my husband to stray from beige might be my biggest challenge yet. What do you think? Should we go classic or daring?

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about breathing new life into your home and surroundings. Every task, from pruning to painting, offers a sense of accomplishment and renewal.

So, what’s on your spring cleaning to-do list this year? Any tips or ideas to share? I’d love to hear them!
